Tell us about yourself and what inspired you to pursue a career in Sustainability Compliance
Sustainability is at the forefront of everything we do today. For me, it is about encouraging people to step out of their comfort zone to make a difference. By looking at key issues with a different mindset, we spark innovation, which then drives positive change for local communities, towns, cities, and the world.
After completing my BA in Geography at Newcastle University, I knew I wanted to continue my studies. So last year, I completed my Masters in Sustainability, Energy and Development at Durham University.
What key skills do you need as a Sustainability Compliance Officer?
Communication is key to effectively educating people about sustainable practices and the latest developments within the field. It's also important when it comes to working with various teams and subcontractors to deliver key projects.
Having a passion for sustainability is also crucial. It's a fast-paced sector that’s continually changing and developing. Keeping up with the latest research, legislation, and best practices is important for my own professional growth and also for the development of the business.
What does your typical day look like?
All of the Sustainability Compliance Officers at Equans UK and Ireland use the ‘common data environment’ (CDE), a cloud-based space where we store all of our project information. Every day, I log on to make sure everything is up to date on CDE and follow up on anything outstanding.
Throughout the day, I regularly check in with the different teams and subcontractors I work alongside to raise any issues, inform them of project updates, and ensure everything is running smoothly.
As the Sustainability Compliance Officer for the North East and Cumbria, I work across several different projects in the region at any given time. When on-site, my job is to ensure that everyone understands what paperwork is required and adheres to the latest sustainability standards.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
I am proud to be making a difference. Creating energy-efficient homes positively impacts people's lives, from ensuring that they live in quality homes to lowering their monthly bills. Everything I do day-to-day has a long-term impact on the local communities I work within and the planet.
What advice would you give to someone considering a career like yours?
Keep an open mind, as the sustainability sector is rapidly evolving, and you are constantly learning on the job. You also must have a passion for sustainability in order to drive change.
I’d also advise that, alongside studying, getting hands-on experience is important to help bring to life what you are learning and its impact, whether that’s getting work experience or working on a local community project.
How did you find working with the team at Coleman James?
I can’t thank Charlotte enough for helping me secure not only my first job after graduating but also my initial role in sustainability.
The whole process took exactly six weeks, from Charlotte reaching out to starting at Equans UK and Ireland. At each stage, Charlotte offered me great advice, worked quickly, and kept me updated - even today, she still checks in regularly to see how I’m doing.
