Job Description

 Our Client now have an exciting opportunity for a Principal Telecoms Engineer, to be engaged upon a portfolio of Rail Infrastructure projects within our rail team.

Role accountabilities:

  • Acting as Contractor’s Responsible Engineer, leading the development of Telecommunications system designs and projects to meet the Client’s objectives, working throughout the entire project timeline from concept to operations, with existing and emerging technologies.
  • Implement Network Rail or London Underground applicable standards to telecoms systems and procedures, to maintain a cost effective, high quality, safe and environmentally responsible approach to Telecoms design, construction, commissioning and other technical activities on relevant projects, compliant with all relevant legislation.
  • Plan, co-ordinate and manage Telecoms engineering tasks including resources and equipment in order to deliver tasks effectively and efficiently.
  • Work closely with all stakeholders to provide detailed input to specific project programs ensuring innovation and technical excellence are effectively delivered to meet client needs.
  • Ensure project tasks are delivered and undertaken in accordance with customer Health and Safety procedures and requirements within main line rail, light rail and mass transit environments.
  • Responsibility for development of designs and projects to meet the Client’s objectives, working throughout the entire project timeline from concept to operations, with existing and emerging technologies.
  • Working across multi-discipline design teams, lead and mentor other engineers and less experienced colleagues.
  • Undertake design review / approval ensuring compliant to standards and code of practices.
  • Maintain and develop good relationships with internal and external customers, industry associations, suppliers and Partners.
  • Being knowledgeable and experienced in telecommunications technology, industrial and commercial networks across a broad range of infrastructure projects.
  • Supporting the capability development of the Telecommunications team and supporting the collective learning of the organisation.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • BEng or BSc Degree or higher in a Telecommunication / Systems Engineering related subject

·        Member of professional body, Chartered or working toward

  • Fully conversant with British Standards, Railway Group Standards, Company standards and CDM Regulations and other relevant legislation.
  • Highly experience with Network Rail and/or Transport for London Telecoms assets and project lifecycle on multidiscipline railway projects
  • Technically competent to lead engineering design, coordination, managing inter disciplinary interfaces and ability to adapt to quick changes in design.
  • Previously accepted as CRE for Network Rail projects, with track records of delivering Operational Telecommunications System designs inclusive of

o   Trackside infrastructure including cable systems 

o   Lineside Telephones and Concentrator system

o   Driver Only Operation (DOO) system

o   Transmission systems, e.g. SDH/PDH and IP/MPLS

o   Radio systems in UK Rail operations (GSM-R primarily)

·        Working knowledge and past experience of Station Information system including the following sub-system is desirable

o   Station and Building network infrastructure including LAN/WIFI

o   Structured Cabling infrastructure – Copper and fibre optic

o   Station systems (SISS) including Public Address, Voice Alarms, Surveillance and Passenger Information systems

o   Integrated Station / Building Management Systems (ISMS, IBMS)

o   Power loading, basic understanding of Electrical supply and UPS System

  • Experience of estimating for engineering projects and tenders with regard to engineering resources, plans, technology, risk and process.
  • Strong collaborative behaviours to interface with internal and external stakeholders / clients
  • Willing to travel and work at various locations within the UK, which may include unsocial hours on an occasional basis.
