Job Description

Coleman James are working with a North West based contractor who due to their continued growth and success are in the market for a Senior Data Centre Manager. The client works throughout the UK and have a growing portfolio of clients globally. To support recent growth within the company, this position will be based from their Manchester office, but their will be some travel as required on a project basis.

The Senior Data Centre Design Manager would take a leading role as part of the Data Centre team as a specialist in Data Centre Engineering, supporting all disciplines around Data Centre projects and co-ordinating the production of data centre audits, proposals and design deliverables.

Their Data Centre Design team work closely with clients throughout the lifecycle of a data centre project and therefore the Senior Data Centre Design Manager is required to have a high level of understanding and experience allowing them to produce high quality proposals, undertake audits, and develop designs as required to meet the requirements of the customer. The successful candidate will have a good level of experience in the industry to allow them to support the client in determining the best way to progress a project or requirement.

Following the appointment, the Data Centre design manager, will continue to support the customer and client team as a single point of contact for the design deliverables of a project, working closely with the appointed Project Manager to deliver high quality, award winning projects.

The suitable candidate will have a strong experience in data centres, telecoms M&E infrastructure or other critical engineering environments, and will ideally be a qualified engineer with a bias towards either mechanical or electrical engineering. 

Separate from their professional engineering bias, the suitable candidate will have an excellent understanding of all data centre technologies including; Critical LV Switchgear Arrangements, UPS Systems, Standby Generation, Critical Cooling Systems Inc. Chilled Water, Fire Suppression, Control and Monitoring systems (e.g. BMS, PMS and EMS etc).

The suitable candidate will be capable of working both independently and as part of a team as required for the delivery of a project. The suitable candidate will also be able to take a leadership role where a team is required for the technical delivery of the works.  

The suitable candidate with be a good communicator, able to establish productive, professional relationships with key personnel both internally and externally.

The suitable candidate will have a strong understanding and experience of working with Data Centre standards including Uptime Institute, BS EN 50600 and TIA-942.

The suitable candidate will be capable of undertaking audits of smaller data centre environments independently, commenting on elements such as Resilience, Reliability, Sustainability, Energy Efficiency, Maintainability, and Compliance with Relevant Data Centre Standards, and will be able to manage and co-ordinate a small team with the production of audits of larger environments.

The suitable candidate will be fully proficient with typical office software e.g. MS Office (Word/Excel/PowerPoint) and a basic understanding of AutoCAD / Revit and BIM would be preferred although not essential.

Although experience of all of the above is preferable, the client is committed to supporting the development of all our engineering team and therefore if additional support is required for some of the above, this can be considered subject to further discussion.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities.

  • Produce Audits, Concept Designs and Proposals for Data Centres, Telecoms and other critical spaces, managing and co-ordinating the wider design team as required.
  • Manage the technical development of Proposals and Tender Responses, supporting the Bid Team as required.
  • Produce and/or manage the production of specifications for Data Centre and Critical Environment projects.
  • Undertake reviews of design drawings and specifications providing feedback and comment as applicable.
  • Produce, co-ordinate and/or review technical submittals prior to submission to client teams completing trackers and/or using project specific project management portals as required. 
  • Obtain quotations from subcontractors and specialists as required and to review quotations for compliance.
  • Carry out site surveys to allow the accurate production of tender responses and the production of concept designs.
  •  Undertake site audits either individually or as part of a team as required for the size of the site. Reviewing Layout and Configuration with respect to usability, resilience, reliability, Sustainability, Energy Efficiency, Maintainability, and Compliance with Relevant Data Centre Standards.
  • To liaise with other divisions and departments, and with specialist sub-contractors and ensure that all drawings and specifications are issued with all required information.
  • To liaise with the Procurement Manager to ensure all necessary specifications and drawings and available for procurement use.
  • To check and approve Purchase Orders with respect to Technical Design
  • Experience with Data Centre Installations is essential.
  •  Based from our Manchester Chadderton Office, travel through the UK will be required, with potential travel to EMEA regions as required for individual projects.

 

Skills and Qualifications

  • A strong technical experience in leading data centre engineering projects is essential, ideally qualified to degree/HNC level in a related engineering field.
  • Fully proficient with all office software and able to produce high quality professional documents, presentations and reports. Experience of working with CAD, 3D, BIM software.
  • Good communicator, both in writing and on the telephone.
  • Able to prioritise tasks and manage time, to meet tender return deadlines.
  • Is or Is working towards Chartered status with a related recognised body (e.g CIBSE, IET, IMechE).
