Job Description

You will be involved with writing specifications, reviewing tenders, producing designs, providing site based activities including, testing and commissioning. You will also support and lead the management of technical interfaces, particularly with our clients.

The role will involve:

  • To work at a senior role in the management of projects; take management responsibility for project engineers, design engineers and CAD operators on their mentoring, objective setting, establish best practice, training and development.
  • Work as part of a team to design, build, test and commission engineering solutions to customer specifications and produce designs, drawings and documentation.
  • Liaise with customers to determine their exact requirements and assist them in the development of their system/delivery requirements.
  • Provide technical guidance as a subject matter expert on allocated technologies to the Rail Engineering Delivery Team and Rail Customers.
  • Attend meetings internal at our site locations and client locations as required.
  • Technical support to the development of current and future systems architectures/designs and their implementation.
  • Responsible for checking designs against contract and customer requirements.
  • Responsible for ensuring equipment lists are produced in readiness for project deliverables.
  • Checking documentation and analysing tenders ensuring that they are fully costed.
  • Liaise/communicate professionally with clients, providing progress and feedback as and when required.
  • Support in processing client changes to contracts and management engineering solutions for customer projects specifically for the rail industry.
  • Support the Project Manager in processing client changes to contracts and assist in controlling time, cost and quality of work to meet project deadlines.
  • There will be a requirement for occasional site work for site surveys, testing and commissioning activities.
  • Supervise, mentor and support Design Engineers to establish best practice, and help them fulfil their potential and development.
  • Analysis of events and feedback to senior management to identify lessons learnt/ problem areas and assist in preventing re-occurrence.
  • Ensure compliance with all Quality Assurance Procedures and current legislation / standards.
  • Working with the Product Supply team for purchase of equipment and bought in sub-systems.
  • Responsible for generating technical documentation and reviewing technical documents.
  • Produce both customer and internal reports where necessary.
  • Assist sales with bid opportunities and presentations.

Skills & Experience:

  • Possess an Engineering Qualification such as HNC, HND, BEng or equivalent.
  • Advantageous but not essential : experience of managing a small/medium sized team of design engineers.
  • Strong leadership skills including an ability to drive a team’s performance.
  • In depth knowledge  of requirements management for complete project lifecycle
  • You will need to have an excellent working knowledge of building, implementing and maintaining Rail systems and infrastructure on client’s sites.
  • Ability to read drawings and interpret designs.
  • Substantial experience of Rail Projects (Controls Systems) and operational requirements thereof
  • Project planning and ability to manage multiple workstreams.
  • Good working knowledge of  IT Packages such as MS Office, Visio, CAD, MS Projects etc
  • In-depth knowledge of system design, including general arrangements, schematic diagrams, loop diagrams etc.
  • Undertake reviews/audits of design and/or construction activities, monitoring safety, environment and ensuring quality of design, construction, testing and commissioning and management systems are adequate.
  • Able to engineer & deliver a project in accordance with client specifications, drawings & documentation.
  • Knowledge of British & European Standards.
  • Able to produce & process project documentation (i.e. Functional Design Specifications, Test Procedures etc.)
  • Knowledge of Quality Assurance.
